A strange reversal of circumstances happened on the first night of the North Hills Covenanter season. New Life, league champions of 2017, were several players short of a full squad. North Hills, who forfeited two games last season for the first time in over a decade, had enough on this night to lend New Life a few players for a scrimmage.

A long batting practice was held before this one, and it helped to get the RP bats going early. North Hills batted around in the first two innings, which included league debuts and first hits for Dan P., Spencer, and Tessa. The offensive outpouring was capped by a 3-run homer by Ben P. in the second, the first of the season, giving the Covenanters a 14-3 lead. New Life, with the North Hills additions of Sam, Annika, and the newlyweds (Mitchel and Chelsea), came back gradually, including a 3-run homerun by pitcher and coach Lee U. However, it was not enough, as the scrimmage was mutually called after 6 due to darkness. Though it is marked in the books as a New Life forfeit, the Blue Banner was raised for the Covenanters on the first night of the season. And the turnout for this night’s game raised $120 for the parking lot / missions fund campaign.
